MLK Day Jan. 18, 2021 Virtual Program
On behalf of the Board of Directors of New Braunfels MLK Association, Inc., I extend our gratitude and thanks for all of the hard work & great support in helping to make this year’s MLK Day 2021 a great success. We were very happy to see such great support from our community and city officials who participated in our MLK Activities leading up to our MLK Virtual Program Celebration on MLK Day. The compassionate spirit of excellence all of you demonstrated exemplified the kind of unity that honors the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our featured Guest Speakers & Musical Guests did an outstanding jobs in their presentation of speeches & songs and where par-excellent. **
Once again, I extend our heart felt thanks to all of you for your contributions, donations, and the sacrifice of your time which was rendered during the entire process of planning for these last few months.
One of our goals is to create unity and equality in our community. In honor of MLK Day, we wanted to offer Dr. Martin Luther King’s great words to inspire art. Attached you will find packets for educators and parents/caregivers to use. We ask students and adults to chose a quote and create a drawing to reflect the idea. Art is a wonderful way to allow for reflection and self-expression on something that inspires us. Below you will find two downloads: one for educators and one for parent caregiver.
The important aspect of this activity is not the end product. It is taking the time to share with younger people in your life their ideas and your own about what Dr. King's words mean to you and them or how their drawings express what they hope for the world. Just have a good time being together!
Remember the colored chains of paper made in school to decorate the Christmas tree? Why not cut paper into 2 inch wide strips; print words that reflect the teachings of Dr. King or decorate them; then tape them and link them into your chain. Drape in the house or perhaps on a tree. Do this at your office to promote community. Remember, you should be talking & discussing as you work.......
COMMUNITY ROCKS: Children & adults share their artistic streak by painting smooth rocks with vibrant colors & inspirational messages. The rocks are placed in areas for people to find.
COMMUNITY BAKE SALES TO SUPPORT THE FOOD BANK: Some neighborhoods are having old fashion bake sales to raise monies for the local Food Bank. Cash donations are also accepted.
I HAVE A DREAM: Signs are being made and displayed in yards illustrate a quote of Dr. King or to express the artist dream of what the world would be like with equality, unity and compassion.
